My name is Elliot, and The Bowery Mission saved me from the streets, drugs, and despair.
Basically, my life went downhill, when over the course of just a few years I lost both my parents and started using drugs.
Then, things really snowballed two years ago, when I lost my brother to cancer and lost my job. In short order, I was homeless — and devastated. That was rock bottom.
I spent six months on the streets, and eventually wound up in public housing. They assigned me a counselor, and this woman sensed I was very depressed. She asked me if I was ready for the "change of my life" . . .
Well, she wasn't kidding. She brought me to The Bowery Mission, and things haven't been the same since.
After I arrived, I met my counselor, and he began mentoring me. For some reason, he saw something in me, and has helped me learn to live a life that honors God. I've been at the Mission for a year and a half, and I know that he and I are lifelong friends.
I also learned important job and interview skills at the Mission's Career Center. They prepared me for a good job, which I found at the local Whole Foods Market, and now I'm working my way up.
Today, my future is very different because I came to The Bowery Mission. I'm working hard and saving up to move into my own place. I'm so grateful for this help turning my life around.
